Color From Nature- Flora, Fauna and Fungi 7/15 - 7/19

Exploring the range of color potential from nothing more than Nature's offerings, students will experience traditional immersion dyeing, as well as methods both old and new of adding surface design to fabrics. These can include direct application of thickened dyes and mordants (fixatives), resist techniques like Shibori and various paste resists, rust dyeing and eco-printing. Planting, growing, harvesting, foraging and preparation of dyebaths will also be covered, along with safety and environmental issues.

Introduction to Foundry: Aluminum Casting 7/15 - 7/19

This workshop for middle and high school teachers introduces participants to the properties, chemistry and processes associated with casting. Critical processes are covered in detail with hands-on casting, metallurgy, and inspection techniques employed to ensure participants leave with a lasting understanding and knowledge to employ with their students.

Participants will work with basic molds to create a unique bowl of their own design. Participants will assist with running the aluminum furnace to safely melt and pour molten metal and work.

With generous funding from the Emerson Foundation, this workshop, including room and board, is $100.

Intro to Wood Turning 7/15 - 7/19

In this introductory workshop, students will learn the excitement and joy of making simple, beautiful wooden objects. Using locally sourced materials students will learn mounting techniques, grain direction, types of cuts, sanding and finishing. Instructor Tim McKee will also teach proper grinding and sharpening, safe tool handling techniques, and the importance of muscle memory to cultivating a feel for form and design. Students can expect to go home with a solid foundation in turning from which to explore new techniques and designs on their own.
